Long live the Queen of New York, it pretty much came out of nowhere on Wednesday, via instagram. Before I get into the plot of this story, lets acknowledge the legend.
For 20 years Angie Martinez has been one of the forerunners of the iconic Hip-Hop/R&B radio station that has long since span way beyond the boundaries of New York, it's name making it into numerous rap records.
From rap greats Biggie and Tupac to music titans Kanye West and Jay Z, Angie has interviewed everybody. Her career spans almost 4 american presidencies 2 of whom she's interviewed presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
You'd be hard press to find any other media personality in music who's had better interviews or has done it at a high level as long as Angie has.
Just in recent years I can recall great interviews with Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Drake and more. She has the uncanny ability to make artists open up more than they usually would.
So for that I'm truly grateful for her contributions to Hip Hop.
Here's what Angie had to say:
Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever
had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly….the listeners… for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show [heart emoji] stay tuned…. Love, angie
That Being Said…..
What the f*ck is going on? Shortly after the news broke I started getting a few messages regarding what was really going on, there were whispers that Angie was going to be moving to Power 105.1, What!!!!?
It actually makes sense when you take into account the odd tweet that came from the Power 105.1 Twitter account.
Seemed odd then but makes more sense now, and it's now official the rumors are confirmed! Angie Martinez will take over afternoons at Power 105.
That's a big blow to Hot 97 and could be the thing that finally places the once irrelevant Power 105.1 in the number one spot. Clearly the Breakfast Club is the best morning show in New York and now they have one of Hip Hop's greatest radio personalities on the roster.
