he didnt do it for survival or else he wouldve stopped. he did it because he was vicious and greedy. he clearly said he didnt want to work cleaning toilets. he wanted cars and money. the movie only beautifies why he did it. In response to Greg, not all black people are proud of what frank lucas has done. Although Frank Lucas broke the law, I think that everyone can admit that he was a very smart buisnessman. Had he been able to get his education, he may have been the Russell Simmons of his time. How many of us can say that we took a business and grossed 1 million dollars a day. Also, I feel that he did what he had to do to survive. This is not exactly an excuse but it is no different from what many people do everyday to get ahead in their careers. I agree that he helped to ruin many peoples lives but he was not alone. He did not force anyone to take the drugs. He simply supplied them and for that he was punished. Taking the drug was totally up to the individuals themselves. I feel that the only real victims are the children of the junkies. Plus, so many of you are quick to say what the man should or shouldnt have done but what would you have done in his situation? Tell me how to support a family of eight other children, a mother, and an array of cousins with no education. You cannot read or write. You are not even a legal adult and you are African American. You are already defeated. Many black men have trouble getting a job today, let alone, back then. Many of you have forgotten that back in those times, blacks were still seen as the “other” type of people. Think about it, segregation in the U.S. did not happen until 1963. In those times, Lucas did not have a chance without using the drug market to his advantage. His choices were to have a legal job, and not be able to support his family. Or, have an illegal job and keep his family affloat. Which would you choose?

The film American Gangster is brilliant. I really enjoyed it. Frank Lucas was a very smart man. Although he had a rough chiildhood it doesn’ excuse selling drugs. He is a very brave man for telling his story and it should be noted that his story is telling wanna be and protential gangsters they ent clever! Frank is paying for what he did today killing so many. first off, let me see that i enjoyed american gangster just as much as the next person. denzel is one of our generation’s greatest talents and he presented frank as a man of complexities. now, to refer to some of the comments before: as a minority, i’m disguted by frank lucas, his lifestyle, his tainted legacy, and his lack of morals and integrity. millions have done what they had to do to survive, across the span of human civilization, and they did it honorably, even if it was hard. frank lucas took the easy, selfish, ruthless route b/c he was spineless and undignified. he hurt his own ‘people’ and the harlem community. langston hughes would roll over in his grave to know that lucas infested his ‘beloved harlem’ with his filth. and to ship drugs in the coffins of those poor helpless boys sacrificed for a war (and don’t forget, young black men had the HIGHEST rate of service and deaths – there were more black men over there than any other race) totally blows my mind. and to top it all off, interviews and documentaries about him confirm he’s still as cocky and unapologetic as ever. it makes my blood boil! what he did is indefensible and it sickens me to think that some of you posters support and glorify his actions, with weak arguments like “times was hard” and “people would have done it anyway” like it makes it okay = that is a cop-out and if our entire country resorted to that thinking it would be the end of civilization, b/c we would have all nuked each other by now.

During those times there wasn’t a whole lot of oppurtunity for minorities. Frank Lucas did what he had to do to survive. It’s was hurting his community but at the same time the economy was hurting the community even worse than what it is doing now. So who’s setting the wrong example. There’s only one life to live. Fulfilling one’s self prophecy is critical and he had to do what we have do.

For the people he served those are choices they made if he was apart of it or not they probably would have done it anyway.
