For the season finale, Aaron McGruder decided to go out with a bang. Literally. Woodcrest is the target of a terrorist attack. The prime suspect, Huey Freeman, learns that the feds are coming to apprehend him. He takes Ruckus hostage and flees in a school bus. The alphabet boys track down Huey’s whereabouts and dispatch a sinful amount of soldiers to go after him. Agent Jack Flowers is hot on the trail in order to bring law and order to the town. Outnumbered, Huey eventually throws in the towel.

They eventually realize that Ed Wuncler and his grandson are the real terror suspects. But rather than go after them, the feds decide that some people are above the law. Wuncler reasons that people want life to be like the movies with good guys going up against bad guys, but that what America really needs is a rallying cry – a reminder of why it’s great to be American.

“It’s Goin’ Down” ends with Granddad conceding that the world would be much better if everyone listened to Huey. Granddad even apologized for not listening to Huey. Huh? Granddad apologize for something? He must still be blazed from two episodes ago. Like I’ve said in earlier recaps, Huey is the voice of Aaron McGruder on The Boondocks and his message for Season 3 is clear: we can do better. But hey, don’t mind that pretentious sonamabitch and his lame cartoon characters, he’s just being his preachy self.

As is so often the case, though, the episode really belongs to Ari, who’s still waiting for the Lizzie bomb to drop. No one has been this nervous about secret tapes since Nixon. “Deadline Hollywood would run a story about me having a loose stool, much less tapes,” Ari tells Babs in one of the show’s best lines. But when he makes a fishing call to Deadline’s editor (played by Carrie Fisher), he discovers she has no dirt. So what’s become of the tapes?

Ari stalks Lizzie to a restaurant. “I haven’t slept in two days,” Ari says. “I need those tapes.” Lizzie wants to know why she wasn’t promoted and, in a rare moment of candor, Ari admits his wife wanted her out. A dètente is reached: Lizzie will gove back the tapes if Ari helps her get a studio job.

More evidence that Vince is lost: he’s taking advice from Billy Walsh. ”You look tired. You smell,” Walsh says as Vince heads to an important meeting with the director of “Airwalker.” Vince’s coffee remedy makes him more jittery than a methhead. The meeting is a disaster. Walsh is trying to rehab both Chase brothers. In a pitch meeting, he unveils his concept for Drama’s animated show. The Pitch: ”You’re a high strung simian trying to make it in a world that just doesn’t get you.” The title: “Johnny’s Bananas.” Drama is not on board.

Lizzie gives Ari the coveted tapes. But someone sent Deadline Hollywood the transcripts. NFL franchise – gone. Home life with the wife – we’re predicting stormy.

Complex: When I got the press release for Pilot Talk, I noticed the tracklist included songs with Wiz Khalifa, but those tracks didn’t make it on the album. Curren$y: Well, you know how that go with deals and clearances. I just couldn’t get my man cleared in time. I don’t know what the deal was, but I couldn’t put those records out. I knew eventually somebody was gonna ask me what happened and why I don’t have him on my album, but that’s just a part of the game. That’s why I am the way I am, just on my own grind ’cause I don’t really understand how that work and why my dude couldn’t get on. I dunno. It’s that business shit.

The Boondocks Season 3 Episode 11: Lovely Ebony Brown

The Boondocks kicked into a different gear with the eleventh episode of Season 3 (“Lovely Ebony Brown”). This episode keeps the humor light, turns stereotypes on its head, and stays as close to reality as possible. You’ve been warned.

The episode starts with Granddad deleting all his social networking accounts, which he had set up to try and find true love. Incidentally, it’s after he commits Facebook suicide and ventures into the real world that he finds the true love that had eluded him all along. His love interest Ebony Brown, played by the gorgeous Gina Torres, seems too good to be true. Huey and Riley remain skeptical. You can’t blame them. The last woman Granddad brought to the house tried to kill the entire family.

As it turns out, Ebony Brown checks out fine in every category. Unconvinced, Granddad continues to sniff around for some dirt. Still nothing. A confluence of insecurity and suspicion drives Granddad to take some drastic measures. Ultimately, he manages to blow an opportunity to be with the first perfect woman he’s ever met.

This is where the show might seem a bit odd to some. We know from every other depiction of black love that it’s always the woman who goes bat shit crazy and ruins an opportunity to be with a good man. How dare McGruder turn that stereotype on its head and show something that might actually happens in everyday life?

But that’s what I liked most about this episode. I know people, men and women, who don’t necessarily exist within the strictures of any particular mold. The world is full of Ebony Browns — hardworking black women who aren’t exactly waiting for some rapper or a captain-save-a-hoe to sweep them off their feet. McGruder rarely explores the black woman on The Boondocks, but the few times he’s done it has been in ways few shows have attempted.

While this episode was focused on insecurity and its toxic effect on relationships, it also slipped in some self-referential lines to remind us that the season is drawing to an end. For instance, when Ebony Brown asks if she could be a character in Granddad’s life she gets this response: “I don’t think I have many episodes left.”

No, this one wasn’t perfect. The plot was average and I didn’t laugh once. But in the wake of Slim Thug’s remarks about black relationships, this was a necessary conversation.

According to hitsdailydouble.com, Eminem’s Recovery is projected to have sold anywhere between 320-340k, putting Em at the #1 spot for the second week in a row, and putting him over the platinum mark. The controversial hip hop veteran has recaptured his platinum touch after a successful return to recording in 2009.

Other projections for the week include Drake’s Thank Me Later at 115-125k, as well as The-Dream’s Love King at 55-60k. The Roots at 21-24k, and Usher at approximately the same figures.

Watch The Boondocks Season 3 Episode 10 – The Boondocks season 3 episode 10 aired last night on television and if you happened to miss it because you were out watching fireworks on the 4th of July then you can watch it at the end of this post.

The Boondocks season 3 is apparently in its last season so we should enjoy the episodes while they last. In this particular Boondocks season 3 episode 10 titled “The Story of Lando Freeman”, it was definitely a funny one. I mean, most of these episodes of The Boondocks are funny and that’s probably why this has been one of the best series on Adult Swim.

In this particular episode, we see McGruder take on an issue of black family and those talk shows all about paternity disputes. Later we see a guy named Lando turn up at the Freeman’s to do landscaping just as Uncle Ruckus is picking up a new gig with some good ol’ white folks. Of course, this isn’t just a coincidence given the fact that Lando thinks Grandad is his long lost father.

“Recovery’s” debut week sales surpasses the first week of Eminem’s last set, “Relapse,” which began at No. 1 in 2009 with 608,000. It also beats the opening of 2005’s “Curtain Call: The Hits” which entered at No. 1 with 441,000 in 2005. Eminem’s new album also wows digitally, as downloads made up 255,000 of its first week. That’s the second-biggest digital week for an album in history. Only Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends” notched a larger frame, when it debuted with 288,000 downloads in the summer of 2008.

While Tom is trying to deal with his troubles, Huey and Riley are in trouble themselves, given the option of getting expelled or taking part in the Scared Stiff program and visiting a prison (of course, Riley is thrilled with either option). The two end up in the Scared Stiff program, and Tom decides to tag along as a chaperone in order to conquer his own fear and try to avoid being scared stiff by the experience. He tells his wife he wants to become a defense attorney but can’t visit his clients if he’s too scared to walk into the prison. Plus, if he becomes a defense attorney, he can save others from being sent to prison and brutally raped.

Of course Uncle Ruckus has yet another job in this episode, picking up the kids in the Scared Stiff program and telling them he’s a volunteer correctional officer. He tells the white kids in the group it will just be like a trip to the zoo, while informing Riley and Huey it will be like a trip to the future for them. Riley starts fashioning a shank from a toothbrush before Tom spots him with the sharp object, taking it and pocketing it himself after feeling a flash of fear at the thought that he’s about to walk into a prison.

And so the kids and Tom are introduced to a group of prisoners, one of which informs the bunch that he didn’t do much to end up there; he just killed somebody. He starts talking to the kids about man’s oppressive system, telling them that they don’t know what he’s talking about. Huey informs him that he knows exactly what he’s talking about, delivering an eloquent speech about how prisons are an easy solution to social problems and a civil rights violation, to which the prisoner responds, “You said what I’m trying to say, only smarter!” The prisoners then start telling the kids that the worst part of prison, just as Tom fears, is being raped. One prisoner informs Tom that he’s the type of guy that definitely doesn’t want to end up in prison, and proceeds to describe why prisoners save their peanut butter and jelly (you don’t want to know). He demands that Tom take off his shoes, pants, and jacket, which a terrified Tom proceeds to do, but the shank falls out of his pocket and catches the eye of the Booty Warrior (I guess assaulting Chris Hansen landed him in the slammer), who pockets it. After the other prisoner informs the scared stiff kids that Tom wouldn’t stand a chance in prison by complying with his demands like he did, the Booty Warrior steps in and grabs Tom, pulling the shank and delivering the same speech he gave Chris Hansen. However, a terrified Tom breaks free and bolts out the door.

So according to the official numbers from Soundscan Drake moved 447,000 his first week which T.I. was close to with his prediction. I expected those numbers judging from the fact that his album did leak a month before it’s release but on the flip side I was also prepared for him to do some crazy numbers like a million his first week due to his dedicated fan base. There’s also the fact that the album release took too long, last year when he had a more organic buzz similar to what 50 Cent had in 2003 but not as big would have been the perfect time to drop that album and I feel the numbers would have been double what they are now. There’s a thin line between buzz and saturation, you could be 2 songs from not being hot enough or 2 past being the guy that when people hear you they go “oh not this guy again”.

Through out this year Drake started to become that “not this guy again” artist and that’s because there was just so much of him out there from radio hits to mixtape leaks and everything in-between. It’s not like 7 years ago when the radio mostly dictated what we heard and when we heard it and you received the content in moderation instead oft all at once like the Internet does. 447,000 copies for first week sales is great by any standard though  especially for a debut album and it will certainly go platinum. But since Drake represented this change in the game that would give birth to the new generation of rappers and a new business model for the music industry, when he signed to a major many felt he dropped the ball because he didn’t need a major to do these numbers, hence why he said “Never dropped the ball, fuck was y’all thinking” of his Over single.

Drake has already gone the major label route so there is no new business model and of course Drake didn’t want to risk failing going that route, how many of you facing a record deal with a 2 million bonus would leave that on the table to go independent? That’s what I thought. Drake will not be the guy to change the direction of the industry and the way the business operates but he has changed the climate of the type of music artists are making. We were all tired of hearing every single artist talking about drugs, guns and bitches and about your past gangster life before rap when it’s all bullshit, come on every artist lived that life? Nah we not drinking that cool aid. So you can thank Drake for that now,  but I guarantee you there’s a rapper out there somewhere working diligently on his music, moderately leaking tracks on the web that will change the music industry and he’ll do it in the next three years.

At the end of the day Drake has a solid album out and he’s talented enough to stick around for years to come and I expect more great music from him. But we’ll have to hold off on that change in the game that we’re all waiting on, one thing is for certain those 360 record deals these labels are handing out now won’t be the future of anything, if your an artist signing those deals you might as well just go to gay bar, bend over and let a hundred gays rape you because that’s exactly what that deal will be like. That’s not a music career that’s a day job….

Honestly Tyler Perry received some Ether in the form of animation on this one, I wish I could watch a video of him watching this episode just to see his reaction.

Some of you were already discussing the verse from Talkin To Myself, where he basically said he was planning on going at Kanye and Weezy.

He might be overestimating Lil Wayne a little bit but either way it would have been lame for Eminem to diss him or Kanye for no reason. Em has always been the underdog it wouldn’t be like him to just go at somebody without being attacked first.

Man how time flies, it seems like it was just a year ago I was telling everyone that this kid Drake had something special to offer to the game. At the end of 2006 I posted a track from him called City Is Mine (before the singing) and said this guy is going to be the future and I remember everyone saying I don’t know Chozen a rapper from Canada? It’s not gonna work, people just couldn’t see this kid from Degrassi being taken seriously in Hip Hop.

I don’t do too many album reviews but since this site was one of the first to cover Drake and became the go to source for everything Drizzy, it’s only right that we take a look at his journey. From before the singing to his first failed attempt a mainstream and then to finally reaching the defining moment that changed everything. I think it’s safe to say that there’s mixed reaction about this album but would you have the same reaction if you had only heard the singles and no leaks and yesterday was the first time you heard the album in it’s entirety? It affects the way you view album when you hear most of the tracks scattered over the web, none the less it doesn’t affect it to a point where it can make a good album suck.

Similar to Lil Wanye most of Drake’s best work isn’t on his album, though the album has some special moments like Over, Light Up and Miss Me and Miss Me especially reminds me of mixtape Drizzy which I think he intentionally went for with that track. That track is good but would have been better with original hook which simply sounded better, Light Up displays how veteran rappers are supposed to collaborate with the new comers in the game, and in classic Jigga fashion he schools Drake to the game and what to expect in the coming years. The album has healthy balance of Rap and R&B tracks and songs like Shut It Down and Find Your Love are two stand out the most to keep females interested and the fellas can appreciate those songs as well.

Listening to the album straight through you can hear some inconsistencies like Show Me A Good Time (should have been replaced with 90 AM In Dallas) which comes off a filler track and features from T.I. and Nicki Minaj were expected to be more epic but instead they fell short. Karaoke and The Resistance are very reminiscent of So Far Gone and are good songs depending on what your looking for from Drake. Then he pulls you back into the album with a song like Unforgettable which features Young Jeezy and apart the Jay-Z feature on Light Up, Jeezy is the most notable feature on the album and made the track a instant after your first listen.

Though the title Thank Me Now is a fitting title for the last track on the album the song is self isn’t special and left the album on a low note.

When it’s all said and done the album fell short of a classic, and more is to be expected from one of the leaders of the new school. He’s still one of my favorite new artists.

I give Thank me Later 3.5 out 5.

The Boondocks season 3 episode 6 is titled “Smokin With Cigarettes” and we get introduced to the character Lamilton Taweshawn. We’re first introduced to Lamilton where they show some footage of him being interviewed about his bad behavior. Then we learn just how bad his influence on Riley is.

Lamilton is an eight-year-old who proves to be a bad influence on Riley as he lights up a cigarette while causing havoc with his grandmother’s stolen car. He takes Riley on a crazy ride in which ends in a high speed chase with the police.

Once they get caught, Riley’s grandfather tells him to stay clear of Lamilton because he is nothing but trouble and all he likes to do is hurt people.

There is more about the show but it surrounds Lamilton and his bad influence on Riley. If you want to watch The Boondocks season 3 episode 6 online then you can do so below.

I was having a conversation about Jay-Z and Nas and how it was really crazy how they were having this Nas vs. Jay-Z moment 10 years ago and no one really talks about it now. Former drug kingpin “Freeway” Rick Ross could face off against the rapper Rick Ross (William Leonard Roberts II) in court this summer, over the usage of the name “Rick Ross.”

Ross was sentenced to life in prison for attempting to purchase over 100 kilograms of cocaine in 1996 and served 10 years. During his incarceration Miami rapper Rick Ross was just one of the emcees to adopt his name. Ross claims that the Bawse signed a multimillion dollar deal in 2006, based on his image and likeness as a drug dealer.

Rick Ross claims Def Jam ignored cease-and-desist letters sent to their offices. Allhiphop.com is reporting that Ross is planning to sue Def Jam, Universal, William “Rick Ross” Roberts II and others.

I mean I might be putting to much out there but I might have some footage of some females I’ve dealt with performing somewhat compromising activities, so what? It’s not a big deal it’s 2010 folks live a little.

Plus like Eve, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Paris Hilton, it usually boosts there profile. Kim Kardashian became a superstar from he lame tape with Ray J.

I think the only time it has a negative effect is if the person is ugly or something of that nature and even then you all would still watch it.

XXL: Here, in an unpublished excerpt from Drake’s XXL cover story on stands now, rap’s next big thing talks the difference between writing rap and writing R&B records, being bored with mixtapes and why he hates the way he looks in pictures, as well as a few other things. How many songs are on Thank Me Later?

Drake: It’ll probably end up being about 15. But it’s just, you know, I love doing R&B music, I really do. And I just always feel like to tie in hip-hop with R&B and to utilize R&B to glue it all together, that’s my trademark. That’s something that only I can do. And that’s why I will continue to do it. There might come a time where I might be like, “Yo, I just want to do an R&B mixtape, or I just want to do a whole [R&B] album,” but I don’t think so, man. I think that that is the makeup of me—melody and just the tone of my voice and all; I don’t think I could ever change that, so…

I’m waiting on the Drake Gangsta Grillz.

Drake: [Laughs] I just find that boring, you know. There’s certain people where it’s impressive, like with Lil Wayne, to hear him freestyling over other people’s beats for an hour is impressive because it’s just like, Yo, this guy never runs out of clever shit to say, but for me, people might want to hear it, but it’s just not something that I really want to give you. I’d rather just give you something that lasts a little longer than that ’cause those mixtapes never really last much longer than six months. When the songs become played out, and…

Well, it’s different now. It’s like Dedication 2 and Dedication 1 and Jeezy obviously, Trap or Die…
Drake: Yeah, but even so, do you listen to those on a constant basis or would you rather put in an album where somebody’s giving you original compositions and moments that maybe apply to your life as opposed to listening to like… I don’t know? I know to listen to freestyles over songs that maybe I’m just sick of, even though somebody kills it, there may be one or two or three that really, really, I love, but other than that, I’d rather just listen to like somebody’s music.

There are some special ones.
Drake: There are for sure.

Do you feel that you can go bar for bar with anybody?

Drake: As far as rappers? Um… I’m really still trying to become a better rapper, you know? And I still have idols. I still have people I look up to. I definitely don’t feel that I’m the best I can be nor am I the best rapper. Like I said, I just love making the music, and I’m less concerned about where I stand in the rankings and more about just where I stand with myself, like am I getting better? You know, am I the best I can be? I really don’t care about like compared to Hov or compared to Wayne. That’s another man. I’ve never been really worried about what anybody else is doing. I just use it as reference points and as influence and inspiration, but I don’t really bother myself with thinking who’s the best. ’Cause that doesn’t really matter. It’s just who’s got the songs that move people at the time. Like if you’ve got the title of being the best rapper but you don’t have the hottest songs out? To me, that’s what’s important is just like putting out consistently good product. I don’t really care how they rank me or anything like that.

How important is it to be involved in the larger rap conversation?
Drake: I definitely want to be great. You know, I’m not saying I don’t care. I obviously care. I love being mentioned in a class of people that are incredible but I mean, you can focus on that shit and drive yourself crazy…. In different genres it’s way different. I think rap is probably the most competitive genre.

Absolutely.
Drake: R&B is becoming competitive, too. Especially with all the younger artists. But in I don’t know if Grizzly Bear is wondering if they’re better than Kings of Leon, you know [Laughs]. I think they all just make the music that they love and that’s kinda what I try to take away from those individuals is I just want to make the music, man, and however it turns out… I can’t sit here and tell you my music is so good ’cause it’s just not for me to decide. It’s for people to decide. The results are always evident. If you choose to ignore them and still say my music’s the best and I’m the best, that’s when you start getting lost.

What’s the difference between writing R&B records and rap records for you?

Drake: R&B records, to be honest with you, is kinda like, I mean, process wise, like the way Jay writes raps I guess or the way Wayne writes raps. Like, they don’t write things down, they just like say it in their head and are able to retain all the information in their head [that’s] how I write R&B. I don’t write down the lyrics, I kind of just stand in the booth and I just keep singing and singing until I just find melodies and words that make sense or come together. Or I just stand in there and find melodies that I love and then really go outside of the booth and think about what’s been going on in my life and try to put words to it. R&B though, I mean it’s really pretty much the same content-wise, you know, it’s all pretty honest stuff. I always try to keep in mind that both male and female will be listening to it so I try to make R&B music that’s not too sappy and not too “girl this” and “girl that” just so that like I sound like a man who’s thinking. I sound like a man who’s confident just so that it’s not awkward for other men to listen to. And then at the same time I try to keep it empowering for women. Really I just like, I like my R&B to feel a certain way and then I that feeling is usually evident so when I get there I’m like okay, yeah, yeah, this is it.

I’ve heard folks say that writing R&B records can be more difficult because there are less words to work with.
Drake: Yeah, I don’t know, to be honest with you, I kinda think that more words can often be more room for error. Like when you have to write a 16 bar verse or a 32 bar verse, which I often do, I feel like that can also be more difficult. I also feel like one of my biggest attributes or talents is finding melody. You know me and [my producer] 40 can sit together and pick melodies that other singers would probably just use as like a harmony but they just become so prominent when you use them as a lead. And yeah, to me, with R&B, I just don’t take it that serious where it’s like I’m an R&B singer and this song has to sound a certain type of way and if not then no one’s going to respect me, you know? I just kinda really allow myself to just have fun. I’m able to let go and just see what comes of it all the time. You know, because it’s the icing on the cake. It’s something that if I’m able to pull it together, I just see it as a plus. When we do get it right, it really adds a dynamic to my career.

How do you make sure you’re saying something new? I can’t imagine you’re studying the entire catalog of every rap record made from all time.

Drake: Um, I mean, I have a pretty good idea. If I come up with something that I think is really, really clever, I’m not afraid to like Google it or really start sitting there and thinking about [it]. Obviously, you’re right – there’s no way for me to figure if it’s been said before in some rap record from some guy that I’ve never [heard of], but as far as prominent things where I’m going to say it and someone right away is going to be like oh that was ’Pac or oh, that was T.I…. I really do try and make sure that a lot of what I rap about has never really been worded in the way that I put it.

Rather than reinterpreting someone else’s structure for instance.

Drake: It’s more in the words. I mean, I admire flows. I really do admire flows and sometimes I’ll flip flows that I love, like the dead prez flow, you know I love that flow. That’s one of the most powerful song’s startings ever in hip-hop in my opinion, you know, and I wanted to pay homage to that, but at the same time, like, unless I directly mean to, usually I’ll stay away from copying or just trying to emulate someone else’s whole style or the type of things they would say.

Earlier you said, you can make just rap records and cater to a small segment, like how important is that to you? Or is it all about just being successful and making records to be successful?

Drake: Like to me, I think about them all the time because you know, I really do care about what they have to say, you know? …I still go on the websites like NahRight, like, I care, I really do care. So like I said, when I do have a chance to get in a rap mode, like for example I did this song off my album last night called “The Resistance.” It’s the song that comes right before “Over” and, man, that was one of those songs where I was like, you know, I really gotta take the time and write this song because it’s an opportunity to really rap and show people that I actually do care about rap and care about what you think about my flows and care about what you think about me as a rapper even if I have a crazy hook on it, which I do… But I still factor them into my thoughts. I haven’t let them go yet, that hip hop population that’s so judgmental and maybe hates everything I’m doing right now ’cause I’m doing it on such a grand scale and they feel like not a part of it all or they feel like I’ve abandoned them and what they stand for. I still think about them all the time.

How do you respond to the hate?

Drake: I don’t respond. I cut myself off from outlets where I would be able to say anything anyway, but it’s really not my style to really say anything to people, you know. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, man, honestly, the music feedback I don’t really trip off of ’cause I know everybody likes their own thing so I don’t really trip when someone doesn’t like my music because what you’ll tend to do is there’ll be 40 people that say, “Oh, dope song,” and then there’ll be one guy that’s like, “Yo, this dude’s overrated, fuck Drake,” and that’s the one you’ll pay attention to. That one guy will make you feel like everybody’s online dissing you so it’s easy to get caught up in the trap of the feedback. But to be honest that’s not even the stuff that bothers me, man. You want to know what really bothers me?

Drake: What really bothers me is that fact that all my life, I always get caught in the worst, most unphotogenic poses ever. Now people follow me with cameras and are just clicking away and I always feel like I just look mad different in pictures. I hate seeing pictures of myself online when I’m leaving a spot or whatever; I just always get caught laughing ’cause I’m always outside making jokes or whatever with the people, but I always end up looking so stupid like that’s the shit that I’m always like, “Man, I wish that didn’t happen,” you know? But as for people’s opinions and shit like that, it’s all good. That’s what’s going to happen. You know people are entitled to their opinion and it takes a certain type of individual to really come online and give their opinion of your music, positive or negative. I don’t know if you do it, but I can’t say I’ve ever gone online and posted underneath someone’s song, and be like, “Dope song, son.” Or, “That shit is wack.” I’ve never done that before. It’s just a certain community of people that really feel like that’s their outlet and I know that me and my friends aren’t any of them so I don’t know who those people are and I can’t really take their opinion too close to heart just because I’m not really sure what those people are made of and if their opinion’s even valid so I just kind of keep it moving.

If it all ended today, if it got taken away, what would you want people to take away?

I’m going in there really like, ‘OK, what’s about to come out of this?’ Because, man, that’s really not my style. The first beat he played me was like, ‘Whoa.’ And he hadn’t heard my stuff really, but the first beat he played me was custom-fit for me.”

Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us. GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions. The family is not aware of any foundations established by GURU. A: I think the world is getting more gay-friendly, so hip-hop is too. But it’s harder to imagine an openly gay male rapper being embraced. People view gay men as having no street credibility. But I think we’ll see one in my lifetime.

Q: Your father set fire to your home when you were a kid in Queens, New York. What happened?
A: He drank a lot and did drugs, and he would get violent when he did. When he set fire to the house, he was attempting to kill my mother. She got out before it burned all the way down. I’ve always had this female-empowerment thing in the back of my mind—because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn’t be. I thought, “If I’m successful, I can change her life.”

“Lil Wayne is a legend,” Drake said. “I could never classify Wayne as victim. He’s too strong to me. Wayne is who he wants to be. People don’t understand. It’s really not an act. Lil Wayne is a character you’ll rarely run across, probably for the existence of human beings. He is that guy. He is Lil Wayne for a reason. He’s a rock star, a visionary, a workaholic. He doesn’t function like anybody I know. He’s a rare breed.

“I don’t think fame really has anything to do with his situation,” Drizzy continued. “We take precautions. All of us do. To be in the public eye and to be envied and have people who hate you and never have met you or have people who love you and tattoo your face on their body and never have met you, it’s an odd feeling for anybody. It’s a rush [for me]. I love it. It gets weird sometimes. So it’s just personal choices we all make. I never felt that threatened. I’m not sure what’s going through his head at the time. But Wayne has a reason for everything, always. I trust in Wayne. I believe in Wayne. He’s gonna be all right.”

“One day, D-Roc said, ‘Yo, 50, I got this guy. I want you to be his DJ. He’s nice,’ ” Grand remembered. “I said, ‘Bring him through.’ Took him to the basement. We did three demos that first day I met him. Passed it on to Mister Cee. That was it. He skyrocketed after that.”

Those rough recordings would eventually land Big on the road to stardom.

” ‘Microphone Murderer‘ is the main demo song,” Cee said. “It’s the demo that I took to Matty C from The Source magazine for the ‘Unsigned Hype’ article. Diddy heard about The Source magazine ‘Unsigned Hype’ situation. So the ‘Microphone Murderer’ was the demo song Puff heard and got him signed. Besides ‘Microphone Murderer,’ the demo tape had ‘Guaranteed Raw,’ ‘Live in Action’ and another song called ‘Love No Hoe.’ And when we say demo, it wasn’t a four-track. It was just 50 DJing on two records in his crib.”

Auto-Tune king T-Pain has produced an animated homage to 1990’s Atlanta Spring Break fiesta Freaknik, which is scheduled to air on the Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim on March 7.

The one-hour special, ‘Freaknik: The Musical,’ took Pain two years to create, and features vocal appearances by Lil Wayne (playing Jesus), Snoop Dogg, Keri Hilson, Kelis, Big Boi, Rick Ross, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. Saturday Night Live comedians Andy Samberg and Bill Hader also round out the bill. T-Pain also voices “a party ghost.”

‘Freaknik’ focuses on a group of students hoping to revive the party, which at one point attracted more than 250,000 people, until it was shut down in the late 90’s.

It’s mind boggling how they get away with this on Cartoon Network, shit is crazy.

I just picked up a lot of classic-rock, melodic influence from my mom, music that she listened to, like 10,000 Maniacs, Led Zeppelin, REO Speedwagon and Yes. She was actually dating a dude who was on tour with Aerosmith during the ‘Walk This Way’ tour who brought me back some of my Adidas T-shirts and [a tape of] ‘Paul Revere.’ Beastie Boys, that was my first taste of hip-hop. I equally love both, classic rock and hip-hop. I love all music, really, and I really use classic rock a lot. I’m heavily influenced by that melodically in my music. I can’t really separate the two. Where I’m from is like ‘Hustle & Flow’ versus ‘8 Mile.’ It’s that really grimy, box-Chevy, dope-boy, working-class music.
