Yo, everything in Hip Hop runs in cycles just like the rest of the world…. 360 if you can understand…. everything…. Hip Hop started 30 years ago and it’s been evolving ever since…. now in the 70′s it was really limited on wax (Kurtis Blow, Sugar Hill Gang, etc…) so I’ll start in the 80′s, the east started it and accordingly the wax came out of there 1st…. all the regions had there representatives in the 80′s (examples: Ice-T in the west, Shy-D in the south and others in both regions) but the east ruled the game with their hard, lyrical, tongue twisting, bragadocious styles…. then in the 90′s the west started kickin’ down building in New York and the east was never the same (no diss all love just stating truths that even Jay-Z rapped about)….. the west took over the game….. it was fresh, it was new and it was what the game needed, a change…. a different sound that wasn’t so complicated to listen to, just some top down, smoked out, cooled down, but in ya face gangsta shit…. half way thru the 90′s the game was tore apart by the east/west violence and the game needed a change…. with no coast really steppin’ up completely (every coast had hits but none dominated at this time), the south and mid-west started came to the plate….. bottom of the sixth, tie score and they hit a grand slam….. took over during the age of downloading and blew the game apart….. took advantage of fruity loops, $500.00 pro-tools, web-site, my space, you tube marketing for anybody and everybody out there and droped the atomic bomb to obliderate Hip Hop…. during the 80′s and 90′s all of these things werent so easily accesible…. you could get it, but not in the multitude for so cheap…. but like I said before, everything runs in cycles, the south is now but it’s getting to be repititious cause of time (it’s been hot for a while) and it’s so saturated…. so the next is gonna take over in the next few years and the game will change again…. the hardcore will keep their styles in their regions, but the followers, and there will be plenty, will follow whatever’s big at that time….. and this time, it may be a style of music and not a coast… the internet is melting the U.S. into one big pot…. you have heads in the east doing south songs, you have west coast heads doing east coast music, and south heads touchin’ mid-west styles (just examples, not saying there’s a big number of them doing this, don’t hate….) but what I’m saying is that all of this east/west/south shit is gonna be funny to heads 20 years from now…. when Hip Hop is 3 or 4 cycles down the line, the heads of that time are gonna wonder why WE were battling over coasts cause something else is gonna be big at that time…. it’s gonna be style or something and coast aint gonna matter cause evryone will be doin’ it…. so in the end I’m sayin just chill yall…. no need for all this shit…. it’s the south’s turn now, just sit back and ride it…. but in a second something else will be in and the southern explosion will be a mark on the Hip Hop time line…. You could look at it from a lot of perspectives. Hip Hop is only dead in the sense that it isn’t what’s hot right now and it doesn’t sell like it used to, then again there’s a difference between Rap and Hip Hop. Most people just confuse one with the other. I like both styles from all regions. I like the lyrical and conscience Hip Hop and I also like the stuff that shakes the asses on them shawties at the club. The point is that I like all forms for what they are. When I spin a track from the East I’m expecting that verbally complex sound. When I spin something from the South I’m expecting my sound system to shake the whole damn street. When I spin something from the West it just gives me one of those chilled and laid back moments and maybe I’ll roll up a blunt. Each of those examples are what those regions are known for. They all outshine one another in their own way and all of them appeal to different groups of listeners. There is no one style better than the other and THERE IS NO GREATEST RAPPER OF ALL TIME! People want to give Weezy that crown but the truth is that the only reason he’s seen that way is because he has the most commercial appeal in the game, but when did that ever make someone the greatest? Just saying, not hating.
The point I’m trying to make is that people should just enjoy Hip Hop or Rap for what they are (each sub-genre) If you like East (NY) then like it. If you like West, then like it. If you like South, then like it, but everyone needs to quit hating on each other. There’s no point in it and in the end all it does is make Hip Hop / Rap look bad. There’s NO other genre of music that fights within itself because of some stupid shit like where you sit on a map.
