Rapper T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested in Los Angeles on Wednesday night for alleged possession of a controlled substance.
According to an arrest report on the incident from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, during the course of a traffic stop involving Tip (born Clifford Harris Jr.), 29, and Cottle, 36, on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood at 10:30 p.m., “deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.”
A narcotics investigation followed and both Tiny and T.I. were “found to be in possession of a controlled substance.” Law enforcement sources tell us L.A. County Sheriff‘s deputies pulled over the multi-platinum selling rapper and his wife in a Maybach on Sunset Boulevard around 10:18PM. Deputies say they smelled marijuana.
Law enforcement sources tell us the controlled substance was not cocaine, but rather the class of controlled substance that triggered the arrest includes methamphetamines and ecstasy. Take a close look at the photo of T.I. getting arrested … and focus on the styrofoam cups in the front and back cupholders … although cops aren’t saying which controlled substance they found in the car, there seems to be evidence of Sizzurp … aka purple drank … aka codeine syrup. A form of codeine falls under the class of drugs for which T.I. and his wife, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, were arrested.
– Codeine is the main ingredient in Sizzurp, which is a growing problem in the South.
– Sizzurp is typically ingested in styrofoam cups … it’s become a “thing” in the hip-hop community.
Cops won’t say specifically which drug they found, though our sources say it’s the class of drugs that does indeed include the main ingredient for Sizzurp.
Both T.I. and Tiny were booked at the West Hollywood sheriff’s station on charges of felony possession of a controlled substance, and bail was set at $10,000 each. Deputy Jeff Gordon confirmed on Thursday morning (September 2) that both had posted bail around 4 a.m. PT and were due back in court on the charges on September 3. A spokesperson for T.I.’s label could not be reached for comment early Thursday morning.
Tip, who celebrated the #1 debut of his film “Takers” last weekend, is on federal probation following a seven-month prison term he completed in March on weapons charges. At press time, Gordon said considering T.I. was allowed to post bail on the drug charge, it did not appear that the rapper’s probation from the federal charge would be impacted by Wednesday night’s arrest.
Update:T.I.’s Maybach was pulled over because they made an illegal U-turn. The cops then smelled the weed aroma and decided to search the car. TMZ is now alledging that they found methamphetamines and ecstasy in the car and that both T.I. and his wife might be facing up to a year (Tiny had been stopped for weed and ecstasy in the past.)
