Kendrick would have been number one, if it wasn't for Taylor Swift releasing her album "RED" the same week, which sold a breath taking 1.208 million copies. That Pop market ain't no joke. "good kid, m.A.A.d city" earns Lamar the second-best sales week of any rapper in 2012. Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" being the only one that sold more, racking up 253,000 copies its first week out. In an exclusive sit down with TheWellVersed & 2DopeBoyz, Kendrick Lamar reveals that not a single thing on good kid, m.A.A.d city was fabricated and this album closes a chapter in his life that he's been rhyming about since the Kendrick Lamar EP, Overly Dedicated and Section.80. Back in late 2011, Lamar stated to TWV that his major label debut would unite all of the loose ends told on the previous projects. Turns out that his master plan was well executed as good kid, m.A.A.d. city does an excellent job of telling the Compton emcee's story. For Lamar, the entire process was therapeutic. "It's 100% real," Lamar says in from a studio located in the outskirts of Las Vegas. "It's easier for me to write that way. I couldn't fabricate anything and I know that the people close to me, when they finally get to hear it, they'll be like 'whoa' he's revisiting demons and this album was really me moving on with my life. Truthfully, being able to get that out is a lot of skeletons in the closet that put a burden on your life and a burden on your career." The artist formally known as K Dot says that he tells this story to remind and inspire people that doing the right thing will eventually pay off. "To The youth of this generation: I come from where you come from. I made a change within myself to do something positive at the end of the day and you can do it too."

Shyne Calls Kendrick Lamar’s Album Trash, Schoolboy Q & Game Respond

So Shyne isn't feeling Kendrick Lamar's "good kid, m.A.A.d city" album and took to Twitter to voice his dissatisfaction. While Tweeting his dislike for the album, fellow TDE member Schoolboy Q stepped in to respond. View the series of tweets from Shyne and Schoolboy Q below. Schoolboy Q wasn't the only West Coaster he got into it with, Game chimed in to tell to leave his homie alone. He didn't stop there, he called up Hot 97 radio station to talk to Cipha Sounds, Rosenberg and K Foxx and defended his comments and explained why he thinks the album is so bad. Shyne states:

I ain’t starting no trouble. Listen, y’all live in the United States of America. We don’t live in the United States of Aftermath, Jimmy Iovine doesn’t pay me, I can say whatever I want. I’m not talking reckless. I said the young boy got potential and I said he was talented, but the album is trash. That’s tough love.

He adds:

Beats is trash, number one. And once your beats are trash, you’re finished because you can’t handle a good flow. I don’t really want to hear what you gotta say. I’ll go buy Dr. Cornel West’s album if I want to hear someone talk.

Shyne feels that people are gassing up Kendrick:

I feel bad for him because everybody’s gassing him right now, everyone’s on him. He on fire because of that Interscope machine, he’s on fire because of that Dr. Dre machine. He’s nice, but that’s a lot of hype. All I’m saying is, to show y’all I’m not a hater, 50 delivered. I never had nothing positive to say about him, but he delivered. He lived up to the hype, Get Rich or Die Trying was a classic.

He continued:

I’ve been in this game since 1997, professionally, and you cant tell me how I’m supposed to come up with my opinion, you could disagree. That’s cool, that’s what democracy is all about, but I’m saying is he didn’t deliver. 50 Cent delivered, Eminem delivered, The Game delivered, Snoop Dogg delivered a great first album, Kendrick Lamar aint do that.

Kendrick Lamar – good kid, m.A.A.d city

The Kendrick Lamar good kid, m.A.A.d city album is here, without a doubt one of the most anticipated albums in years. Many have even argued that it's the most significant album debut since "Illmatic." Yeah, I know...Blasphemy! But that's the conversation being had around the web right now, for me personally the jury is still out on that. I believe that's a conversation for another time, but what we can talk about is this album being one of the most important album releases this year, or even in recent years. "good kid, m.A.A.d city" represents the changing of the guards in Hip Hop, a sign that we're moving away from the "1 + 2 = 3" simpleton way of rapping back to lyricists being at the forefront of rap. I believe this is something Drake started with Thank Me Later in 2010, though many would disagree because they don't believe Drake is a legitimate lyricist. That's debatable but that album signaled a change in what would shape the next 10 or so years of Hip-Hop. This was further confirmed with the release of J. Cole's "Cole World: The Sideline Story" in 2011, another major release from a true lyricist. Now we have Kendrick Lamar who basically brought the West Coast back, not mention being likened to Nas and 2 Pac due to his subject matter even before the release of his album. So now that the album has arrived lets get into it.

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city Review

1. Sherane a.k.a Master Splinter's Daughter The perfect track to start the album off with, produced by Tha Bizness, at first I thought Sherane was a metaphor for something else but Kendrick is referring to an actually girl, this will play out throughout the album in skits. The skits plastered all over this album is what makes it flow so well, after this track was over Kendrick's mom calls him asking where he is with her van (the one on the deluxe album cover). She mentions "Sherane" in hopes that he's not out messing with her. His father takes the phone, complaining about wanting Domino's pizza, at which point his mother tells him it's the voice mail and takes the phone back. They argue a little bit then Kendrick's father ends off with saying "Matter of fact, Cut my motherfucking oldies back on you killing my motherfucking vibe" 2. Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe In terms of vibe (No pun intended) this falls in place with the opening track, the Sounwave produced track presents a laid back feel that you wouldn't necessarily want to bump in the whip but definitely at the crib watching the TV on mute with some rolling papers and a red cup as apart of the recipe (I swear I'm not doing that on purpose). As I mentioned previously the skits connect this album, at the end of this one you hear one of Kendrick's friends saying "K.Dot, get in the car nigga, c'mon we fittin to roll out, nigga I got a pack of blacks and a beat CD, get your freestyles ready." 3. Backseat Freestyle This is where the album takes a turn, Backseat Freestyle produced by Hit-Boy switches up the pace with a much harder beat and much more aggressive rhymes. It's a banger, not much more I say than that, definitely added it my Fav's playlist. It's one of the few tracks on the album that could be considered a club record. No skit on this one. 4. The Art of Peer Pressure At first this song starts off sounding like it's going to be another laid back record, but at the 1:07 mark it turns into a much more serious record. Story telling is something Nas mastered, and Kendrick appears to have been taking notes. He paints a very vivid picture of rolling around with his friends and results of what happens due to Peer Pressure. This track resonated with me on a personal level, it embodies my teen years growing up in Jamaica (The country). I dug this track. The track ends off with Kendrick Lamar and his homies talking about the day they had, they talk about getting active, but before that dropping off K.Dot (Kendrick Lamar) at his crib so he can go see Sherane. 5. Money Trees This track was cool but nothing special in my opinion, you might think different though. It's in no way near being a filler but it just didn't move me in anyway and it's a little too long. The skit on this one dates back to the first track, his mom is still waiting for Kendrick to bring the car back. Kendrick Lamar's mom continues to call him and leave him voice messages, she lets him know she's still waiting on the car and that his father is drunk and trying to get his freak on, so she wants out of the house. 6. Poetic Justice What do I even have to say about this track it's already a classic? From the title to the Janet Jackson sample and the Drake feature, it's already a hit. You should recall Kendrick Lamar was featured on Drake’s most recent album Take Care on one of the interludes, so now Drizzy returns the favor. Even though Drake and Kendrick are polar opposites, the synergy on this one is undeniable and it's another hit from the album. The skit on this one ends off with Kendrick parked on Sherane's block and two dudes start pressing him, trying to figure out where he's from. 7. good kid This is one of the more lyrically compounded tracks on the album, he goes off on this one and it can be considered one half of the title track. 8. m.A.A.d city Obviously this would be the second half of the title track, it's more cracked up than good kid, it's actually 2 records in one. It's a banger. The skit at the end of this one is a continuation of Poetic Justice's skit where the 2 dudes (Happens to be Sherane's cousins) were pressing Kendrick while he was parked waiting for Sharene. As it turns out they gave him a beat down. His homies comfort him after the beat down, one of his friends says to him "they got you good my nigga? don't even trip just lay back a drink that" 9. Swimming Pools (Drank) Not much to say about this one, you already know about this one, it's a hit record. When it first came out, people saw the T-Minus production credit, plus the name of the track and started thinking -- oh boy he's about to go commercial. That turned out to not be the case, though it's a commercial success it's actually a part of a bigger story, that is good kid, m.A.A.d city. At the end of Swimming Pools is where things take a turn and start coming together, K.Dot and friends retaliate against Sherane's cousins by shooting at them and one of K.Dot's friend's brother gets killed in the exchange. 10. Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst This is a commentary on the storytelling of rap. Kendrick takes on the perspective of two people he knows - one positive and one negative. Would love to hear some conversations about this track and who you think these two perspectives Kendrick is writing from. At the end of this one, K.Dot's friend is getting ready avenge his brothers death, at this point a woman who by the sound of it is a senior calm them down and made them participate in a prayer. Lets talk about this one. 11. Real This song denotes an incredibly important realization that Kendrick Lamar has felt. The song as a whole alludes to really important topics like the importance of loving yourself (and how this is a necessary component of having some of the powerful insight that Kendrick describes through out the album) 12. Compton This track closes off the entire project, by bringing it right back to what it's all about, California. Kendrick Lamar is the new embodiment of the West Coast and he makes it clear that he's all about that and represents that. This banger was produced by Just Blaze, whom Kendrick actually met through Dr. Dre. According to him, this beat’s actually around three years old.

Conclusion

The album is pretty brilliant, I didn't realize how brilliant until I started writing this all out. It's so dope that a record like "Swimming Pools (Drank)" became a hit while actually being taken out of context, very much like how "Poetic Justice" and "Backseat Freestyle" were. Once you hear it in it's entirety, those songs acquire more meaning. I was very much impressed by this album, I give it 4.5/5. The reason why it didn't give it a perfect score is because as clever as it was, you also have to consider enjoyability. Kendrick Lamar kicks it with his homies from LA Leakers, where he reveals the meaning of the “m.A.A.d” acronym from his album title. It turns out that it actually has two meanings, “my ANGELS on ANGELS dust” and the other standing for “my angry adolescent divided.” He explains "my ANGELS on ANGELS dust" and why it's the reason he doesn't smoke anymore, he goes into detail about it on the album. He talked about linking up with J. Cole and working with Scoop Deville on “Poetic Justice” featuring Drake. New music from ZZ Ward titled "Cryin Wolf" featuring Kendrick Lamar. I thought this was the first time I ever rocked with anything from ZZ Ward but I have heard her elsewhere but didn't really take notice. She had a track with Freddie Gibbs on her last EP and she also did a record with Asher Roth on his Pabst & Jazz mixtape, so she's very Hip-Hop affiliated. Her style is a cross between Country-Blues pleasantly blended with acoustic elements. The result is something slightly similar to Adelle's sound. When I first heard the beat I wondered how Kendrick would tackle it, but then beat hits a climax and sets the perfect tone for Hii Power to come in and kill, and he does. "Cryin Wolf" is from ZZ Ward's debut album Til The Casket Drops, drops October 16, 2012. Thoughts?

This isn't always the case, it's usually it doesn't work or it sounds like every other posse record out there. It's a radio rip for now but the CDQ will be up shortly.

The thought of hearing these 2 young lyrical titans on a whole album together is very intriguing. Usually I would say no to something like that because being a great lyricist doesn't actually mean your good at making music, in fact it's almost always the opposite. This is not the case with Kendrick Lamar vs J. Cole, these two have a nice track record of putting together dope songs, both of whom already have hit records. The question that remains, is who would rain supreme on this album? J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar?

Most recently, West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar decided to make his point of view known, saying that he sides with Young Money's artist in this case. While on 105.1's The Breakfast Show Wednesday morning, Kendrick says he wasn't aware of the matter before his set at Summer Jam 2012. "Man, I was backstage I didn't even know that, that was going on onstage. I would be hot, she got all the right reasons to be [upset] and do all that she did." Lamar then continued to answer with "I'd still perform though" when asked if he would still hit the stage if put in the situation. The list for XXL's 2011 Freshmen Class is here and includes Diggy Simmons, Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill, Big K.R.I.T., CyHi Da Prynce, Lil Twist, Yelawolf, Fred The Godson, Mac Miller, YG and Lil B. Personally I really only fux with 3 cats on this list, I've been saying Meek Mill was going to be something ever since 2005 when I first saw him on YouTube back when those street DVDs were all over the place, fast forward 5 years later he's now the biggest new cat to come out of Philly and just signed a record deal with Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group. Fred The Godson is fresh and it's been a while since I've heard well put together punchlines and metaphors from a new rapper not since early Banks and Loso. Yelowolf stood out to me from the first time I heard him spit and is really the first white rapper since Eminem that I count as lyrical which is why him signing with Shady records makes so much sense. I can't wait to hear collaborations with him and Eminem as well as Slaughterhouse. Mac Miller and Diggy Simmons stand out as well but they're not necessarily my cut tea, so I'm not really checking for them. Just like 2010 it's gonna be a good year for Hip Hop again, thoughts on this years picks?

The LA Leakers brings together Kendrick Lamar, Game, Thurzday, Snoop Dogg, YG & Joe Moses together their Purp & Yellow version of the original. We posted a partial version of this yesterday with Snoop, Game and YG's verse with Wiz changing the hook to Purp & Yellow. I guess this could be considered the remix, since I don't think there will be an official one.
