Lupe Fiasco Responds To D.L. Hughley: “Obama Don’t Need Radical Rappers Kissing His Ass”

Last week on Hot 93.7/Hartford comedian D.L. Hughley bashed Lupe Fiasco for hie stance against voting saying: He’s bright as hell, but dumb in the ways of the world, Young black men are going to listen to him,”

"Young black men are going to listen to him. They are the ones who have decisions made for them, [decisions] that they are not even involved in, which is silly to me."

Lupe Fiasco never backing down from a fight responded in a series of Tweets telling Hughley to put his money where his mouth is:

"Better yet @RealDlHughley you put up 50k and I'll put up 50k and let's flesh out some programs for rural & inner city youths our damn selves"

Lupe Fiasco who in the past has repeatedly expressed his issues with President Obama, says rappers don't play a role in helping the president get re-elected:

"Obama need swing states and white people not radical rappers kissing his ass to win this election."

Well I don't know about that one Lupe, gonna have to disagree with that assessment. Lupe ended off his Tweets by further challenging the comedian:

Lupe's journey to the release of his highly anticipated album "Food & Liquor 2: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1" has been paved with controversy, first it was the miss communication with Pete Rock over Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free) which led to some back and forth on Twitter. Then it was the more recent beef with Chief Keef who threatened to slap him on Twitter, after Lupe unintentionally affiliated Chief Keef with the high crime rate in Chicago. Spotted: Hot937

The tracklist from his Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Part 1 didn't have this track on it, so it's not certain that this will be on the upcoming album. Lets start with the Lupe Fiasco Food & Liquor 2 album cover. It's classic Lupe Fiasco and so brilliant, similar to his Friend Of The People mixtape cover, your left asking yourself WTF. This is exactly the reaction that Lupe wants from you.

Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)

The album isn't without it's fair share of controversy, Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free) the first release from the album which sampled Pete Rock & CL Smooth's “T.R.O.Y.” was the first bump in the road leading up to the release of this album. When Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth dropped "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" 20 years ago, the celebrated rap duo was still reeling over the unexpected death of their dear friend Troy "Trouble T" Dixon of Heavy D & the Boyz. What began as the most personal of lyrical eulogies soon became an iconic hip-hop track. When Lupe Fiasco remade the T.R.O.Y. instrumental for Around My Way, Pete Rock decide to let his thoughts be known.

"No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated,the beat is next to my heart and was made Outta anguish and pain. When it's like that it should not be touched by no one,"

Tweeted by Pete Rock. The thing about the T.R.O.Y. instrumental though, it's not an original composition, since it samples from jazz musician Tom Scott's 1967 song "Today." It is possible that "Around My Way," which was produced by Simonsayz and B-Side, sampled the original. This is also not the first time Lupe has paid homage to Pete Rock either, he once freestyled over the "Reminisce" beat for his "Dopeboys" freestyle with Wale and Kardinal Offishall. Pete Rock said he didn't have a problem with Lupe but just didn't appreciate the remake.

"I'm not flattered @ all. Dat shit is wack, and the producer should be ashamed of his fuckin self. Smh,"

Lupe's response to this situation was that he started tweeting other songs that sampled "T.R.O.Y." including Mann's J.R. Rotem-produced "Reminisce" and a remixed version of the song which featured Journalist, Mr. Cheeks and Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth themselves. Finally Lupe took the high road and tweeted a YouTube link to the original Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth video with the hash tag "#20YearsLaterStillTheBest."

Bitch Bad

Moving on from that, we arrive at the second single "Bitch Bad" which when you first see the title, if it were from any other artist you'd know what the song was going to be about. This is not the case when it comes to Lupe, the song addressed the double standard placed upon the word "Bitch" or "Bad Bitch." It wasn't a "Old dude trying to kick knowledge to me" kind of record, it was catchy and simplistic in it's delivery. It was then followed by a music video that fit the context of the song exactly, which garnered Lupe a ton of praise and sparked discussions on Twitter, Blogs and the web as whole. The music video added a visual story line to the song's lyrics and guided you through the mind of Lupe, as he narrates the video.

Lupe Breaks "Bitch Bad" Music Video

Some argue that it's a none-topic, and Lupe just made the song for conversation's sake with no real goal in mind beyond that, which is a valid point but either way it worked.

Lupe random choice in album covers is only matched by his clever choices in song titles. Don't be fooled by the head banging beat and the snappy hook, there is serious stuff happening on this record. Lupe continues to push rap's topical boundaries, Lamborghini Angels touches on religion, pedophilia, scientific cures and more.

That's heavy stuff, and something you weren't expecting with a title like Lamborghini Angels. This was quickly followed by a music video for another single off the album called Battle Scars which features Guy Sebastian. More info coming soon...

Lupe Fiasco speaks on the super high murder rate in Chicago, most of which are which are young kids that look like Chief Keef. On that basis Lupe's opinion on Chief Keef is that he scares him because of what he could possibly represent. Usually people would just write this off as a older rapper hating on young cat but it's not like Lupe is an artist that's falling off or anything. In addition it's a personal attack, it's more of metaphorical likening of Chief Keef to the current state of crime in Chicago.

Lasers is the third studio album by American rapper Lupe Fiasco, released on 8 March 2011 by Atlantic Records in the United States. Production for the album took place between 2008 and 2010. Lasersfeatures production by The Audibles, The Neptunes, Needlz, Alex da Kid, Syience, and long-time collaborator Soundtrakk, among others. Trey Songz, John Legend, Skylar Grey, Sway, Matt Mahaffey, MDMA, Eric Turner and Sarah Green contribute vocals to the album. Lasers was preceded by the lead single "The Show Goes On" and its follow-up "Words I Never Said" featuring Skylar Grey. The songs have achieved moderate success peaking within the Billboard Hot 100 with "The Show Goes On" being certified Gold in the United States. Lupe went in on this freestyle over Rick Ross’ B.M.F. (Burner Money Fast) beat, unfortunately there is still no release date for that new Lupe Fiasco Lasers album. Atlantic is on some fuckry, there was even a Lupe Fiasco petition to Atlantic Records to release the album, I thought it was fake but it’s actually real. Please, what’s the point of that? Lupe isn’t even motivated to make any music right now, if the Atlantic doesn’t release it they’ll leak all on there own and then Lupe will end up spazzing on the bloggers again as if it’s their fault, we’ve all seen this before.

”There’s a misunderstanding with my fanbase,” he says. ”People [at Warner] feel they know my fans more than I do. They want me to step out of my comfort zone and step into theirs. I don’t have necessarily the celebrity success they want me to have but it’s more social success and being able to speak at a college about world affairs. That’s a success, to me.

”I don’t want to be Jay-Z and be worth $400 million and perform on every awards show. It’s getting in touch with somebody who needs to improve their self-esteem. As opposed to driving a Bentley and putting some chains on.”

Lupe tells MTV Mixtape Daily he made Enemy Of The State because they robbed him on the Hottest MCs list.

“It was super easy. I did it in two days. Lasers was almost all done… the super ‘I’m the best MC’ — lyrical — there’s wasn’t really room for that on this album. I was like, ‘Let me give my fans that. Let me let them know that I’m still capable of that. Let me show MTV I’m hot too.’ Kept it short. I felt, if you’re nice, you don’t need an hour. You don’t need one hour and 35 minutes. You don’t need 100 freestyles every week. You need a nice demonstration of what you’re capable of doing very effectively, and you step back. Leave you wanting more. Sometimes the best part of the movie is the trailer.”

There’s some mini-videos for “Turnt Up” & “Say Something” in this segment, during which he mentions that he made both without even hearing the originals.

“I just heard the beat and ‘Say Something,’ the freestyle came out. I could have kept going. I could have rapped over that for 20 minutes.“

“I was plotting on doing the follow-up to that,” Lupe said. “Simply because [Enemy of the State] was short. And I felt like it was space to do another one. I was gonna do another one called Friend to the People, but I started to get wind that people had songs they shouldn’t have had. I was like, ‘This is just gonna open the floodgates if I come out with another record. I know these dudes are threatening to leak records and do crazy stuff.’ Sometimes I feel there may be too much Lupe music out there — whether it be old stuff or new stuff or freestyles. I don’t want to have a ton of music sitting out. I made the decision to fall back from it and really focus on the climb. We were a couple of weeks away from doing that.”

Lupe Fiasco Dropping New Mixtape On Thanksgiving

“The last six months, it’s been like, ‘I gotta really, really go out there and show that I’m nicer than all of them,’ ” Lupe said. “It’s like, ‘All right, so be it. If it takes three more albums to do it, then so be it.’ That’s what I got left with Atlantic. Three more after Lasers. I’m already done with two. The mixtape is coming Thanksgiving. It’ll be another mixtape after that and an album after that. It’s really to get that status and lock it in and [and have people] be like, ‘Look at this positive dude, the underdog. The positive one who came and murdered all these dudes. And he’s there, and he’s good.’ ”

Lupe said he isn’t concerned about what he has to do — he’s going to prove he’s the best.

“I’m finnin’ to house every single mode and arena I can get into,” Fiasco promised. “If y’all had somewhere where it’s live performances, I’m finnin to have the best live performances. If it’s mixtapes, I’m finnin’ to have the best mixtapes. If it’s albums again, it’s gonna be the best verse. If it’s the best dressed, I’m going hard as well.”

Lupe said the yet-untitled mixtape will be him going in over other MCs’ beats. “I got four days to figure it out,” he said about the title. “I’ve been dabbling with some names. I don’t know yet.”

Concerning the production, Lupe said he’s not going to let any original production go.

“Why waste it?” he said. “I still got my plan. I’m not finnin’ to diverge off my plan and my career and how I wanna roll my music out.”

Solar Midnite is my first commercial release that I actually produced as well as wrote. The New Moon team asked me if I could do a song specifically for the film. They invited me to an early screening of the unfinished film from which I pulled different elements that I thought would translate into a great song. I pulled in vocalist and bassist Graham Burris and acclaimed musician Matt Nelson to help fill it out my vision musically and “joila” Solar Midnite was born. The song basically deals with the chaotic love story that takes place between the characters. It’s more on the rock side of my musical catalog and comes straight from my die hard fanhood of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Anthony Keidis, one of my FAVORITE RAPPERS. - L-U-P-E
