Lyricism: An artist's expression of emotion in an imaginative and beautiful way; the quality of being lyrical.

Is that Hip Hop as we know it today? "Imaginative," "Beautiful" and "quality" aren't words that come to mind when I hear most rappers these days.

Ran into a 2010 video of Jay Smooth of the official HipHopMusic.com, where he talked about Lyricism vs Capitalism on his iLLdoctine video podcast. He pointed out a little fact, saying that majority of the successful rappers from the last 10 years have been lyrical.

So why do rappers now just simply want to sell us swag?

If your paying attention, you'll notice some of the young spitters are already separating themselves from the pack, like J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar. Fans are on the edge of their seats waiting for these guys because there's an actual thought process that goes into their lyrics.

What's the most important thing to you in Hip-Hop?

Lyricism
Style (or swag)
Persona
Production
Chorus

Talk about it.

The post Lyricism: To Be Lyrical or Not To Be Lyrical, That Is The Question appeared first on iHipHopMusic.
